Hi, who are you and what do you do? Hi, I’m Maxine and I make lighting out of found objects and vintage items.
Explain what you do in 100 words. I turn much loved objects that hold great nostalgia into lighting.
What's your background? I was born in Manchester and raised in Canada on the Prairies. I grew up going to punk gigs and writing fanzines. When I was 18 I left following a job that I had applied for in the back of the NME and ended up in Glasgow. Then Manchester, then Israel, then Yorkshire before ending up in Brighton in the mid 90s. What a great city. Since then, I’ve had what is called a creative portfolio career :-) I worked as a set dresser and prop maker on TV and places such as the Sherlock Holmes museum in London and Glyndebourne Opera house. I’ve made jewellery and club wear, bought and sold vintage and I have a little shop in the Brighton North Laines called The Stanley Road Shopette at 5 Upper Gardner St selling my lighting, other makers work and vintage.
What's the best piece of advice you've been given? “QUIT YOUR JOB!” I was working in mental health rehab and my mother who is very much risk adverse told me to quit my job and pursue a more creative and for fulfilling career path. She was very right.
What jobs have you done other than being an artist? I used to work on an 0800 phone tarot line in the early 90s. I’ve also worked with a circus travelling around the UK, as a wedding planner and as a pub cleaner.
If there was one artist dead or alive you could hang out with, who would it be? Barbra Hepworth. She was a badass.
