Alter Box - Esme, Saint of Welcome Shade by Seventy Seven Seas
ALTAR BOX - ESME, SAINT OF WELCOME SHADE.
This is a small box for wall hanging, made entirely from recycled materials. It is similar to traditional Mexican altar boxes, though the Saints are new. The Saints should exist, and quite possibly do - at the very least they exists in the altar boxes! In this case, it is Esme, Saint of Welcome Shade. Esme is the Saint to ask for somewhere to relax when you are in need of the cool. She stands behind the sun, always able to escape its light and heat. She hides her face not because she is shy, but because she is also the saint of evasion.
The box is made entirely from recycled materials, the main one being aluminium harvested from drinks cans. It is first drawn into with a hand made tool, then the pieces are treated to a combination of heat, paint and sandpaper, all of which brings out the contrast between the detail and the surface. It also adds a slight patina to the surface, warming the cool, flat silver of the aluminium.
The aluminium is backed by vintage book pages, early twentieth century encyclopaedias or books of musical scores.
It measures 17 x 11 x 3 cm or 6.5 x 4 x 1.25 inches
Because of the nature of the materials, the box is very light and can be suspended by its wire loop from a small nail or thumb tack.
Great care is taken with packaging, though in keeping with the recycled nature of the materials that make the piece, often recycled or re-purposed materials are used too in the packaging so as to keep any new waste to an absolute minimum.
